Parents urged to pay attention to children's moral and national education

Channel NewsAsia, 31 Dec 2011

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has urged parents to pay attention to their children's moral and national education on top of encouraging them to do well in their studies.

Mr Lee said children should grow up knowing how they can contribute to Singapore.

Nearly 200 students from the Teck Ghee constituency received their Edusave Scholarships from the Prime Minister on Saturday.

Mr Lee encouraged them to also do well in their Extra Curricula Activities.

He asked parents to take a realistic perspective and acknowledge that children are different, each with different interest and abilities.

In addition, the Prime Minister said all schools give equal attention to students, and the Government is committed to ensure equal opportunities for all.

Mr Lee said: "It's always been like that but I think it's going to be more important in the next five to 10 years because in the next five to 10 years, what will make us succeed or not succeed is our skills, our knowledge and our ability to be faster, better, smarter than competitors working in other countries. And if we can do that through our schools, through your efforts, I think we can do well."
